HREW Tubing

HREW stands for Hot Rolled Electric Welded tubing. It starts with hot-rolled steel strip that is formed into a tubular shape before the edges are joined using electric resistance welding. HREW is typically supplied in an as-welded condition, meaning the internal weld seam may remain visible.

When comparing with DOM tubing, HREW is often the practical, economical choice for everyday applications where extremely tight dimensional tolerances aren’t necessary. It’s commonly used for general fabrication, structural components, agricultural equipment, frames, and supports where dependable performance and good value are the priorities. 

DOM Tubing 

DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel, but one important detail often gets missed: DOM isn’t technically a type of seamless tubing. It begins as welded tubing before undergoing an additional cold-drawing process over a mandrel. During finishing, the weld flash is removed, and the tubing is further worked to improve its dimensions and surface finish.

That extra processing gives DOM tubing tighter tolerances, improved concentricity, a smoother finish, and greater consistency. It makes DOM especially useful when parts need to fit together precisely or perform reliably under demanding conditions. 

DOM Tubing vs. HREW Key Differences

When comparing DOM tubing vs HREW, the better option depends on what your finished part actually needs to do.

  • Strength – DOM’s additional cold-working process generally gives it improved mechanical properties and a more uniform structure, making it a strong choice for demanding applications.
  • Tolerances – DOM offers tighter outside diameter, inside diameter, and wall-thickness tolerances, making it better suited to parts requiring precise fitment.
  • Surface finish – The drawing process gives DOM a smoother, more consistent surface than standard HREW.
  • Cost – HREW requires less processing, so it’s generally the more economical choice when DOM-level precision isn’t necessary.
  • Fabrication needs – Both can work well for fabrication, but the final choice should reflect the loads, tolerances, machining requirements, and intended use of the part. 

Where Is Each Type of Tubing Commonly Used?

For general shop work, farm equipment, frames, supports, and structural fabrication, HREW often provides the right balance between strength and cost. If a project doesn’t require exceptionally tight tolerances, there may be little benefit in paying extra for DOM.

DOM becomes more valuable when precision and consistency matter. It’s commonly selected for applications such as machinery components, hydraulic-related parts, automotive and motorsport components, roll cages, and other projects where accurate dimensions and dependable performance are important.

The important thing is matching the tubing to the job rather than automatically assuming one is always better.
